According to the Jerusalem Post, European Union officials are moving forward with a plan to label Israeli products made in settlements in the Occupied West Bank, East Jerusalem and the Golan Heights.
Furthermore, according to the publication, the labeling of the products by the EU will begin on October 1st. The EU is set to finalize by mid-October the remaining legal and technical issues surrounding the labeling.
Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu has been harshly critical of the European Parliament’s support of the labeling. According to the Israeli-based publication Haaretz:
The proposal to start labeling products in the EU from these Israeli settlements has been around for years.
NPR’s Jerusalem-based correspondent, Emily Harris, stated:
A spokesperson for Israel’s Foreign Ministry stated the following about the EU parliament’s decision to label the products: “Under the guise of a technical procedure, it’s an attempt to force a diplomatic solution, instead of encouraging the Palestinians to return to negotiations.”
Is the EU’s decision to label these Israeli products an unjust one?

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu blasted the expression of support. “The European Parliament decision is unjustified, it is just a perversion of justice and a distortion of reason, and I think that it also harms peace, it doesn’t advance it,” he said. “The roots of the conflict are not territories and the roots of the conflict are not the settlements. We already have a historical memory as to what happened when Europe marked products of Jews.”

The European Parliament decision was significant. It’s clear that this is the direction the EU is headed. But it is possible that technical issues will delay the beginning of this actually happening until later. It’s been a very long back and forth.
